www vs non-www redirect checker: is your domain set up right?
Your redirect from www to non-www (or the other way) does not work, or one of the two addresses shows an error. Type your domain: we request all four addresses (http and https, with and without www), follow each redirect one step at a time and show where every one ends.
Check a domain
Why the redirect fails
- The www name has no DNS record. Add a CNAME for
wwwpointing at your apex domain or host. No record, no server to run your redirect rule. - The certificate misses one name. A certificate for
example.comalone shows a browser warning onwww.example.combefore any redirect can happen. Issue one certificate for both names. - Both names answer with the site. Google sees two copies of every page. Pick one name and send the other to it with a 301.
- A 302 instead of a 301. A temporary redirect tells search engines to keep the old address. Use 301 or 308 for a permanent move.
- A redirect loop. Your host redirects www to non-www and a plugin or CDN sends it back. Remove one of the two rules.
- A long chain. http://example.com to https://example.com to https://www.example.com is two hops; one rule can do it in one.
- http never reaches https. The browser shows Not secure and search engines may prefer another address.
More than the redirect
Where the domain ends up is one of about a dozen things the free Site Check measures in a real browser.
